“As I have practiced it, photography produces pleasure by simplicity. I see something special and show it to the camera. A picture is produced. The moment is held until someone sees it. Then it is theirs.”

Friday Photo: Greyscale Train Bridge Over Wisconsin River
Another Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and this week’s Friday Photo is once more inspired by the holiday. The image below is a train bridge over the Wisconsin River, taken during a visit to Wisconsin Dells last July. Although the photo was made during the height of summer and not the dead of winter, this photo reminds me of the holiday because it’s right near the spot where (my then boyfriend) Tim proposed to me last year. The Dells are also a spot where we’ve gone the past few years to escape the daily grind for a few days in the summer, so it’s one of my favorite areas in the state.
I’ve always liked the lines of this bridge, the crisscross of iron beams and stippled texture of rivets running along the top and sides. It’s an interesting landmark to study, especially with the picturesque river and bluffs of the surrounding area.

“I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.” – Bruce Gilden
Photoshoot: International Learning Center, Milwaukee
Recently, I visited the International Learning Center, located in Milwaukee’s Avenues West neighborhood. The center provides free skills training and English language lessons to immigrants and refugees living in the Milwaukee area. The photo shoot is part of a story that the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service put together about the non-profit.
Below are a few photos from the shoot. It’s great to know that an organization serving such a valuable purpose exists in the local community!
